Five-year-old Anthony greets us at the front door with a big hug. He jumps up and down while we wait for his brother, Theo, to arrive home from swim lessons. Janie has invited Proud Ground into her home -full of color, light and children’s toys- to listen to her story. Janie shares how quickly one life occurrence, her separation, could impact so many other areas of her family’s life and their overall stability.
Janie moved out of her home and rented an apartment for her and her two sons. To support her family, she returned to the workforce after years as a stay-at-home mom. Shortly after, she received notice that her rent was increasing by $265. Janie needed a solution, “I didn’t want to be in a position ever again where I’m feeling like my kids and I are going to lose our housing.”
With the help of Proud Ground, Janie purchased a permanently affordable home. She shares her daily appreciation for her backyard, which provides a safe space for her two sons to release their energy after school. “The boys actually come home and play in the yard. I remember the first time they did it, I was cooking dinner and it was the most amazing feeling.” Janie also attests to her family’s increased stability, “My family felt disrupted before, like we were a displaced family. With our home now, we can really settle in and be a family again.”
