Opening Doors Capital Campaign

Ensuring That the American Dream is Truly Within Reach, for Everyone

About the Campaign

While homeownership symbolizes the American dream, discrimination has systematically prevented generations of families from attaining this dream. Proud Ground strives to dismantle these discriminatory barriers by Opening Doors to homeownership.

In 2021, we launched the five-year, $5 million Opening Doors campaign to add at least 200 homes to our portfolio. With your support, we are making great strides. Additional support is needed, however, to ensure we cross the campaign finish line in 2025 having met all of our goals.

Support Our Mission: Make a Contribution

Please consider a gift to Opening Doors. Your contribution supports first-time homeownership for our priority populations — low- to moderate-incomes families and BIPOC communities.

Every Opening Doors investment promotes social justice, affordable housing, and diverse neighborhoods.

For information about the campaign, please contact Marilyn Kun, Fund Development Director, at 503.493.0293 ext. 105.

Understanding the Need

Homeownership Disparities for People of Color

Current U.S. Census data show homeownership disparities for People of Color. It’s crucial to invest now for lasting change, creating wealth and opportunity for historically excluded families.

Symone’s Story

Symone is celebrating her first year as a new homeowner. She loves her three-bedroom North Portland townhome, which she shares with her younger sister who just graduated from college.

“I really like the idea of buying a home that would stay affordable for another family if I decide to move on.”

How Proud Ground Helps

Our Homeownership Model

The Opening Doors model leverages investments from the private and public sectors to remove barriers to homeownership and launch permanently affordable properties.

Example: A $415,000 Single-Family Unit

$25,000 Opening Doors Investment
+ $75,000 Leveraged Public Investment (Subsidies)

$100,000 Down-Payment Assistance

Reduces the homeowner loan to $314,500.
(Homeowner escrow payment is $500.)

Families build assets and the property taxes remain permanently affordable.

Proud Ground’s community land trust model puts home ownership within reach for many working families compared to a traditional mortgage or continuing to rent. Plus, homeowners build equity, creating generational wealth.
See the Affordability Comparison illustration (below).

Each $25,000 raised creates a new dedicated affordable property

For many years KeyBank has been an avid champion of Proud Ground's proven model, and we are delighted to dramatically accelerate our support with this new grant [for the Opening Doors campaign]. Our mission is to help our communities thrive, and nowhere is that more important than in underserved populations who have historically lacked access to the opportunity to build wealth through homeownership.

“This is a model that’s going to provide homeownership needs to teachers, nurses, public safety people — working families who don’t have a chance at homeownership now.”
